Vivendi Group Africa doubles its fiber subscriber base to 350,000 in two years

The milestone reached by VGA, doubling its FTTx subscriber base to 350,000 by Q3 2024, represents a significant step forward in its efforts to establish a stronger presence in the Sub-Saharan Africa broadband market. It highlights VGA's ability to scale its operations and attract subscribers in a region where high-speed internet development is full of challenges. VGA has progressively been entering more markets in the region. The last example in date was in July 2024 when VGA launched its CanalBox FTTH network in Uganda, its eighth African market. Initial infrastructure in Kampala allows for connections to 140,000 homes, with plans to scale to 500,000 homes over four years.  As of today, VGA has passed over 3 million homes across the SSA region. However, the gap between "homes passed" and active subscribers highlights the challenges in driving adoption. 12% of the premises passed by the group have effectively been converted into active subscribers. VGA’s growth potential relies on its ability to reach more homes, but also to convert those into long-term clients. The company’s performance in the fiber segment varies significantly by market. VGA has been able to reach a dominant position in emerging fiber markets, notably Togo, Gabon and Burkina Faso. On the other side markets like Uganda and Rwanda are still in very early development stages and in Ivory Coast, where fiber subscribers reached 400,000 by the end of 2024, VGA remains significantly overshadowed by its competitor Orange.
