OTT video services have been globally booming for several years now, attracting a surging number of viewers around the world. But the competition is fierce between platforms, as newcomers continue to enter the market regularly, whether they are local, adressing their home market, or studio giants, like Disney with its service Disney+ that was progressively launched between 2019 and 2020.

OTT video players use several different model to distribute their content, including:

  • SVOD: subscription video on demand, a model deployed by platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max for instance
  • TVOD: transactional video on demand, the oldest on demand model, offered by Amazon Prime Video, or pay TV operators for instance
  • EST: electronic sell-through (also known as DTO, download to own)
  • AVOD: advertising video on demand, used by Youtube, Pluto TV, Plex or FTA broadcasters for instance

The OTT & Video industry in Russia

The Russian video streaming industry had a very dynamic development over the past decade, with multiple actors providing hybrid services based sometimes simultaneously on AVOD (advertising video-on-demand), SVOD (subscription video-on-demand), TVOD (transactional video-on-demand) and EST (download-to-own) models. Russian platforms have since expanded to other markets in the CIS region, generating between 70% and 80% of SVOD total revenues in the area for the past four years. Three SVOD services had more than one million paying subscribers each in Russia as of Q1 2020: Megafon, Ivi and Okko.
