Pluto TV, Roku, Vix … which FAST platform offers the most exclusive catalogue in Latin America?

As FAST platforms lately turned into a new garden of Eden for content providers to distribute their IPs on, competition is ramping up between providers trying to build the most attractive offer to meet the growing demand for tailored content. To do so, the focus had long been put on quantity over quality and the number of FAST channels available in Latin America has increased quickly over time. Following this logic of expansion, FAST services have been trying to serve more countries in Latin America. Regional providers like Vix (owned by TelevisaUnivision) are increasing their footprint and American providers like PlutoTV and Roku have had wide-scale rollouts across the region since 2020. For instance, Pluto TV has increased its number of channels available in Argentina by 84% between 2021 and 2022. As more and more media companies head towards FAST, the specificities of their content offers become central to draw a distinction with their competitors and manage to capture viewers’ attention. In this context, how can FAST channels create the most attractive offer? Which content and scheduling choices have platforms made up until now in Latin America? Scripted content ranks first in FAST providers’ offers in Latin America Provided on a growing number of channels, the most popular genre in the region is Movies & Fictions, far ahead of the others. It accounts for nearly 35% of the total number of channels available through all FAST offers. Inside this genre, Telenovelas and Thriller/Action based-channels take on the largest share, representing 23% and 12% of Movies and fiction channels respectively. Topping 17% of the total number of channels, Lifestyle is the other popular genre in Latin America, while Reality TV and Cooking channels also take a big piece of the pie. News being also a fashionable content representing 13% of the FAST channels in the region, major local Latin American newspapers might enter the market and design specific branded channels in the near future. Looking at the ranking of FAST channels in terms of reach, cooking channels also stand out, as they reach the largest number of viewers across the region. The popular US show Tastemade is for instance displayed in several languages and available on Vix, PlutoTV and Samsung TV+. It ranks 1st and Masterchef ranks 5th. Anime and Justice/crime channels also are well-positioned in FAST services’ program grids. Reality TV channels do not make it in this ranking as they mostly rely on IPs available on one FAST only, such as the latin version of Big Brother (Gran Hermano) accessible through Pluto TV in Argentina since this year. However, these results aren’t set in stone; other genres and channels can find niche audiences amongst FAST media users. This search...
