Disney+ Japan still short of 6 Mn and 8 Mn to topple Netflix and Prime Video

November 2025 marked a pivotal moment in Japan's streaming landscape: Disney+ Japan integrated CJ ENM's Korean originals for the first time as a dedicated collection within its app, introducing approximately 60 titles including acclaimed series like Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, Reply 1988, and Dear X. A Market of Strategic Opportunity This move arrives as Japan's OTT market expands rapidly, reaching USD 10.6 billion in 2025 and projected to grow to USD 14.5 billion by 2030. Disney's aggressive positioning reflects a deliberate regional strategy: significantly increasing investments in local content within Japan and Korea while drastically reducing original content production across Southeast Asia, signaling a clear focus on high-performing markets with international appeal. Worth noting: While Hulu is being integrated into Disney+ globally, Hulu Japan is not owned by Disney and operates independently through HJ Holdings. Closing the Subscriber Gap According to Dataxis, Disney+ Japan now commands 5.5 million subscribers, compared to Netflix's 11.6 million and Amazon Prime Video's 14.7 million. While Disney+ Japan has shown proportional growth, expanding from 4.88 million in Q3 2024, its absolute subscriber gains remain modest compared to competitors. Yet by securing Korean originals, Disney gains immediate differentiation in a market where K-drama demand remains consistently strong. CJ ENM's global licensing arrangement with Netflix (active since 2019) doesn't grant Netflix exclusive rights in Japan, creating space for Disney to secure the same content. The Destabilising Factor The competitive dynamics are shifting more broadly. U-NEXT, has grown quickly to surpass 5 million subscribers by November 2025. But, if Netflix acquisitions of Warner Bros Discovery is approved, it could redirect HBO content to its own platform, undermining U-NEXT's competitive position while further strengthening Netflix's grip. For now, such a scenario hinges on regulatory approval.
