‘Tout Canal+’ Package to Push Netflix to Just Under 4M Subs in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030

Canal+ promised big when it announced its Netflix partnership in June.  The ‘Tout Canal+’ bundle, launched on 7 July, underlines that Canal+ is using Netflix to polish its premium offer for 7.7 million African subscribers across 24 African markets. Prices range from 25 USD in Rwanda to over 50 USD in Burundi and Djibouti, with most markets between 40 and 45 USD. Netflix’s bundled plans are firmly premium, but they are expected to drive faster growth: from 2025 to 2030, the number of subscribers in the 24 countries is projected to grow at a CAGR of 18.2%, compared with 8.0% for the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. Basic, Standard, and Premium are all available as add-ons in every package. In most countries, the Basic tier costs the equivalent of 4.5 to 5.5 USD, with Rwanda the outlier at under 3 USD. For subscribers, Netflix via Canal+ can now be activated not only in physical outlets through a connected decoder but also digitally through the Canal+ app. While unlikely to trigger an exponential surge in Netflix subscribers, this marks a key first step toward broader accessibility and removes the payment barrier, one of several factors that have slowed Netflix’s growth in the region.  Greater affordability could come later if Netflix’s mobile tier is introduced as an add-on within Canal+ offers, a possibility limited for now as myCanal has not yet been launched as a standalone service in Sub-Saharan Africa beyond Mauritius. According to Dataxis, the partnership could lift Netflix from 196,000 subscribers in 2025 to 452,000 by 2030 across the 24 markets. This marks significant progress but remains well short of the region’s full potential. For Canal+, the move lifts revenues and cements its pivot in the region. And with its MultiChoice acquisition just finalised this week, the group looks more determined than ever to anchor itself as Africa’s central media hub.
